Many people see the bible and science as being in conflict. They point to Genesis and say that either the world was created in six days or in millions of years, it can not be both. That is true, but, word used in Genesis for "day" has another meaning, "period of time".
In fact, many of the words in translations of Genesis do not capture to full meaning to the Hebrew. This is not the fault of the translators, it is a problem inherent to all translations. Many words and concepts do not move accurately between languages. Once one accepts the fact that the translation of the bible does not allways reflect the original meaning, and one studies the original meaning, the conflict between the bible and science vanishes.
Linguistics: The Hebrew word used in Genesis for "day" also means, "period of time". Each of these periods of time can be millions of years long, and there is no implication, in the Hebrew, that the "days" are all the same length.
Linguistics: The Hebrew words for "without form" are tohu and bohu. An accurate translation of these words is "trackless waste and emptyness" (e.g. the earth did not yet exist at this stage of creation).
Scientific Theory: "Let there be light" is a good discription of the "Big bang".
